I tend to equate being educated with some sort of formal system.  To be educated means that one has to participate in some educational process.  While learning may be unintentional, education must be sought out.  I also tend to think of education as targeted.  Whether it is the more broad targets of Primary and Secondary school to a more narrow specialization during an undergraduate degree or a distinct specialization in a graduate school setting.  To be educated is to be taught something specific.
